We hear it everywhere: “Never give up. Keep pushing. Work harder than everyone else.” Coaches, social media, even motivational quotes—this is the mantra for aspiring athletes. And yes, determination is crucial. But here’s a harsh truth many young football players don’t hear enough: sometimes, blindly pushing forward can actually hold you back.
Not every player will become a professional footballer. Talent, timing, and mentality—the rare combination of these three—is what truly sets pro athletes apart. And that’s why mindset training and personal development are just as important as hours on the pitch.
Football is incredible—but your personal development is even more valuable. This includes your mindset, skills, education, and off-pitch growth.
Investing in yourself doesn’t mean giving up—it means preparing for life beyond the pitch while still improving your athlete mindset. It gives you perspective, resilience, and confidence. There is many ways to staying connected to football through coaching, media, marketing etc.
I also work with every pro player on discovering their bigger vision, purpose, and “why”. There’s a Japanese philosophy called Ikigai, which focuses on finding the sweet spot between what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. Aligning your football career with this philosophy ensures your life—and your mindset—are ready for whatever comes next.
I see it every day: in some parts of the world, like Africa - where I spend a lot of time - football is often the only path to a better life. Education isn’t always easy to access, so these young players dedicate everything to the sport.
If you’re fortunate enough to have multiple opportunities—school, internships, online learning, or personal projects—use them. Developing yourself off the pitch doesn’t just prepare you for a potential career beyond football; it also enhances your focus, resilience, and peak performance on the field - it is not a distraction.
Football doesn’t have to be only about playing professionally. Coaching, media, marketing, analysis—there are countless ways to remain in the game while growing as a person.
From my own journey, moving into coaching and professional opportunities outside the pitch allowed me to stay connected to football while investing in myself. And that’s the key: developing yourself off the pitch doesn’t take away from your game—it strengthens it. Your mindset, self-awareness, and overall performance benefit from a bigger-picture perspective on life.
Football should be joyful, not stressful. Love the game, work hard, but don’t let it define your entire life. Focus on your personal development, explore different paths, and find your Ikigai. When you do, football becomes a tool that enriches your life rather than a burden that limits it.
By combining mindset training, player development, and personal growth, you can stay in the game you love—while also preparing for the future and building a life you’re proud of.
All the best on your life's journey - enjoy it and keep smiling, yours Stefan

" So many young athletes only perform in training, but block their own performance when it gets tough. Training the mental side of the game is essential these days and the earlier you start the better it is. Together we can work on things like correct goal setting, the steps to visualization that actually work, improving communication and overcoming limiting thoughts, emotions and beliefs.
